Why this matters

Most elections, from a board vote to a presidential primary, still use pick-one plurality voting. With three or more candidates it fails in the same predictable ways: a "spoiler" can hand the win to the option most people opposed, similar candidates split their supporters, and voters end up guessing who is "electable" instead of ranking who they actually want.

Ranked-choice voting fixes that with one small change on the ballot: rank the candidates. If nobody has a majority, the last-place candidate is eliminated and those ballots move to their next choice, round by round, until someone does. No spoilers, no wasted votes, no second election. A winner most voters can live with.

Where it is already used

• Statewide: Maine (all federal elections) and Alaska (state and federal general elections).
• Cities: New York City primaries, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Oakland, Salt Lake City, Portland, and dozens more.
• Everywhere else: the Academy Awards' Best Picture, Australia's House of Representatives, Ireland's presidency, the Hugo Awards, and thousands of organizations, unions, universities, and parties choosing their own leaders.

It is also contested: several states have restricted it since 2024, often before most of their voters had ever cast a ranked ballot. That is the problem we can actually do something about.

Our theory of change: the ladder

People trust a voting method they have used. Almost nobody has used this one. So we are working from the bottom up:

1. Your group. A free poll for lunch, a team name, a vacation. Thirty seconds, and everyone watches the runoff play out.
2. Your organization. Club officers, HOA boards, union locals, student government - real elections with a secret ballot and a count anyone can audit.
3. Your city and state. Voters who have ranked a ballot before say yes to ranked ballots on Election Day.
4. The White House. That's the long game, and it is built from the first three rungs.

Every poll created on rankedchoice.app is a small piece of civic education. That is the mission, and it is why the free tier will always be genuinely free and the count will always be open and reproducible.
