How the count works
- Every ballot counts for its first choice.
- If a candidate has more than half the votes, they win.
- Otherwise the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and each of their ballots moves to its next-ranked candidate still in the race.
- Repeat until someone has a majority. Ballots with no remaining choices are "exhausted" and drop out of the denominator.
Ties for elimination are broken by the earlier-round totals, then by a fixed random draw, so re-running the same ballots always gives the same result. Full explainer: what is ranked-choice voting?
